OPALS Ebook Management

OPALS technology manages eBooks and our support staff can provide helpful strategies for your library to acquire and use them.

eBook licensing variations and some authentication and access platforms can complicate eBook acquisitions, management and delivery. OPALS’ adaptable technology and consultants can help you understand these challenges and implement a strategy that will fit your budget, and deliver eBook resources to your members.

Free, quality E-Book collections

OPALS technology enables you to upload and catalog, free, Creative Commons and OER licensed eBooks. These resources are the easiest to accommodate, and are an excellent first step to providing digital resources to a library and learning community. Ask our consultants about OPALS eBook databases for academic, public, school and professional libraries containing more than two thousand (and growing) carefully selected and cataloged eBooks that you can add to your library.

eBook: Digital Rights Management – Circulation Management

OPALS programmers have developed a way to manage DRM licensed and free eBooks. The system keeps track of digital rights and the number of simultaneous readers permitted when such restrictions are necessary. When an authorized user “borrows” the E-Book… the E-Book has a time allotment in that file that will “return” the eBook for others to read. The system also allows “borrowers” to “return” an item before the assigned “due date” when finished, to make it available for others. DRM-free eBooks can be read simultaneously by an unlimited number of library members.

E-Book Collections: Vendor subscription collections

Some OPALS libraries supplement their print collections with subscriptions to vendor eBook collections. These eBook collections can be relatively small to hundreds of thousands of titles. OPALS can synchronize access to these eBook resources through OPALS public access catalog, and a variety of authentication options both on and off campus.
